Attributes of a Personal Trainer

Hiring a personal trainer can often be a difficult task and choosing the right trainer can make the difference between
realizing your fitness goals and failure. When hiring a personal trainer it is important to know what attributes to look for in a personal trainer.
This article outlines some of the most important attributes personal trainers should possess.
One of the most important attribute to look for in a personal trainer is education. Formal education ensures that the trainer
you are working with actually understands the basics of human physiology and exercise science. Trainers that lack this knowledge often develop training
programs for clients that they themselves do or simply copy one found on the internet or a fitness magazine. These programs are not specifically designed to
accommodate individual needs and won't generate the kind of results you are hiring a personal trainer for.
If a prospective personal trainer doesn't have any formal university or college education you may want to consider hiring
another. If the trainer has education in the form of certification be certain to ask if they also possess fitness liability insurance. Insurance companies do
a good job of screening certification programs and won't recognize a certification program unless it has met certain standards.
Another important attribute of a personal trainer is that they truly believe in fitness and live a healthy lifestyle. If
a personal trainer can't motivate themselves to live a healthy lifestyle and train on a regular basis then the chances of them developing a successful fitness
program for their clients is minimal. Unfortunately there are trainers out there who are blessed with great genetics and even some that use steroids and deceive
clients allowing them to believe that they earned their physique through hard work and commitment.
It is not easy to tell if you trainer actually maintains a healthy lifestyle or if they are putting on a show. Personal trainers
who do maintain a healthy lifestyle tend to have a positive ora. After spending some time talking with a prospective trainer it sometimes becomes evident if
the trainer truly has passion for health and wellness and genuinely care about helping others achieve their fitness goals.
When selecting a personal trainer it is also important to realize that not everyone is blessed with perfect genetics. For
example, some weight loss coaches may themselves struggled with weight loss issues. For them maintaining a healthy bodyweight is a struggle
and they may not possess the desired six pack often sought after. However, in contrast a trainer who fits this description might be able to identify with those who
face these same struggles and because of their experiences are more equipped in helping others lose weight. Additionally a strength training coach doesn't have to be able to bench press 300lb's in order to help someone else achieve this goal. However, if a personal
trainer is unable to maintain a certain level of fitness then it is hard to believe they will be able to help you achieve your fitness goals.
Another attribute to look for in a trainer is the ability to teach clients about fitness. The full benefits of a training
program can't be realized unless the client fully understands what they are doing and why. If the client fails to realize the reasoning behind the program it
is hard for them to become motivated and willing to make lifestyle changes. The goal of any fitness program should be to educate the client and help them
develop habits that will influence their health far beyond the completion of the program.
Additionally if your trainer asked you to perform a sequence of exercises but went asked can't provide a good explanation
for the reasons those exercises where chosen and in what order then it is more then likely the trainer has you following a program out of a book rather then
a tailor made program.
Regardless of your fitness goals it is important to find a trainer that possesses the desired attributes. Knowing what to
look for in a personal trainer is an important factor that will greatly influence success. Among these attributes is the trainer's education, whether the
trainer actually practices healthy living, and their ability to teach the client about fitness in an attempt to develop lifelong habits.
