Boot Camp Fitness Assessment

February 15th, 2011 - by Chad Walls, B.G.S., B.Ed.

Every training program needs a method of assessment in order to measure progress. Boot camp is no exception to the rule. The only problem is that most boot camps are held outdoors. As a result your trainer has to use their creativity to come up with fitness assessments that can be done outdoors with little or no equipment. Girth measurements are one type of assessment that can easily be incorporated into boot camp training. This article outlines the girth measurements I have incorporated into my boot camp.

When new members first join boot camp they have the option of participating in this assessment. The most common girth measurements taken are of the hips, waist, calf, and upper arm are taken and recorded. During the first or second day of boot camp participants are asked to team up with a partner and take these measurements. During this time it is important that as a group this assessment is done in unison and that all participants listen and follow proper instruction. It is imperative that these measurements are taken correctly.

Hips: This measurement should be taken at the largest part around your hips and buttocks.

Waist: This measurement should be taken at the largest part around your waist normally just below the navel.

Calf: This measurement is taken at the largest point of the lower leg. It is important that the muscle is relaxed and no weight is being placed on the foot.

Upper Arm: This measurement is taken at the largest point of the upper arm usually near the top of the arm a few inches below the arm pit region. The arm should hang straight down from the body and must be relaxed. (For male participants whose goal is building muscle they are welcome to take a biceps measurement instead).

These measurements are kept by the trainer and later used at the end of the boot camp (usually 4 weeks duration) to determine success.
